Research topics
My scientific interests mainly concern remote sensing of volcanic activity. In particular, my current research focus on the following aspects:
- automatic detection and quantification of thermal and volcanic gas emissions, using remote sensing techniques (optical, thermal, UV sensors);
- search for thermal and geochemical precursors of volcanic, seismic and hydrothermal activity;
- real time quantification of gas and magma budget;
- correlations between thermal, geochemical, seismic and deformation patterns associated with volcanic eruptions;
- interrelation between rheology, morphology and thermal emission of active lava bodies (flows and domes).
I conceived, and developed the automatic hotspot detection system named MIROVA:
www.mirovaweb.it
for real-time thermal monitoring of volcanic activity.
Currently the system operates on more than 220 volcanoes, distributed in 43 different countries, and is used by 15 volcano observatories for daily monitoring and activity report. In this context, I currently collaborate with numerous colleagues from observatories, research institutions and universities, with whom I keep alive a daily exchange of information and data, as well as a continuous discussion on the topics covered by my research and future developments.
